JOOUST IN COLLABORATION WITH FAO TO COMMERCIALIZE LIVESTOCK FEED

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology has signed an agreement with the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) to support the inclusive commercialization of the production of Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) for the livestock feed industry and document the critical success factors for the BSFL enterprise.

During a consultative meeting between the University and FAO representatives, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Joseph Bosire noted that the project would go a long way in reducing the cost of livestock feed while creating employment opportunities for the youth. While noting the immense opportunities that the collaboration would create, FAO Representative, Mr Tito Arunga noted that they were impressed with the creativity of the innovation. “We were impressed by the creativity barked with innovation that also has a business model accompanying it.” Said Mr Arunga.

The FAO team reiterated the need for more strategic partnerships around climate change and the environment along the Lake Region Economic Block (LREB) Region. Mr David Makongo, the FAO representative based in Kisumu noted that the project will reduce the cost of livestock feed. He also noted the nutritive value of the BSFL as a protein source for animals.

The project will begin with a pilot phase for 18 months and has been supported by the MasterCard Foundation to create job opportunities among the youth.
