Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology was ranked 10th among Universities in Kenya in sports according to a survey conducted by CPS research.
The report is based on a research conducted across Kenyan universities during the first half of the year of 2016. CPS Research dwells on detailed social, educational, cultural, political, religious and economic state of affairs in the world and how they affect various sectors of economy, politics, development and way of life CPS indicated that the targeted population for the research was 55 accredited varsities, top performing high schools in sports, KUSA, select sports Referees/ coaches, constituent colleges and college campuses in Kenya.
During the release, CPS termed sports to possess a lot of benefits on students lifestyle, physical and mental development, career, character, Quality assurance, and more, improves competition among Universities
According to CPS the study objectives were to establish the status of sports in Kenyan Universities, Analyze data collected and rank the universities
CPS report further indicated that Kenyan universities academic calendars are not synchronized with schedule of sports activities with most private universities offering sports scholarship unlike public universities.
Western and Nyanza universities were also said to have zero swimming facilities as majority of public universities in Kenya reported to have no fitness centers
CPS has however called upon the government to create a special fund for sports, Universities to invest in sports, establishment of sports centers of excellence, teaching of sports and sports related sports courses and increased participation in sports.
CPS indicates that to arrive at their earlier results they visited over 250 fully-fledged universities, constituent colleges and college campuses in Kenya where they conducted face-to-face interviews with institutions that granted formal interviews in addition to getting information on all the universities from reliable primary and secondary data.
