Fresh water science is one of JOOUST’s niche areas for research and capacity building as highlighted in the revised University Strategic Plan (2016/2017-2020/2021). Based on this, JOOUST established Pi Global Institute (Water Global Institute) in line with its Strategic Plan. Fresh water ecosystem management and utilization is a new frontier to enhance the realization of the Big Four Agenda of the Republic of Kenya on food security through irrigated agriculture and aquaculture; universal health coverage through management of water quality and quantity; and job creation through the blue-economy-based manufacturing processes.

The Pi Global Institute (PIGI) will be one of the enablers in the realization of Vision 2030 (Social, Economic and Political) Pillars and will contribute to sustainable development and management of Lake Victoria. The Institute will also contribute to the realization of Goals and Priority Areas of Agenda 2063 of African Union (AU) on healthy and well-nourished citizens, transformed economies, modern agriculture for increased productivity and production as well as environmentally sustainable and climate resilient economies and communities. In addition, the Institute will leverage on the achievement of the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Goal No. 2 (zero hunger), Goal No. 3 (Good health and well-being), Goal No. 6 (Clean water and sanitation), Goal No. 11 (Sustainable cities and communities), Goal No. 13 (Climate Action) and Goal No. 17 (Partnership to achieve the goal).

Pi Global Institute is providing technical backstopping to JOOUST Enterprise Services (JOOUSTES) on fingerlings production to supply quality fish seeds to both cage farmers in Lake Victoria and ponds grow-out. This initiative is also part of the efforts towards meeting the Big 4 Agenda framework on food security and SDG 2 and 3 and the global Blue Economy paradigm.
